8883 Fisherman's Cottage

Claude Monet, a founder of the French Impressionist movement, brought the study of the radiant effects of light and water to its most exquisite expression. During his stay in Varengeville, on the coast of Normandy, he wrote, "…I have discovered a spot where I think I can make beautiful things." Monet painted nine interpretations of this rocky coastline in 1882, each time experimenting with different lighting and effects. The paintings were immediately purchased by art dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel who exhibited them together in March 1883.
