9021 Creation Rose
Representing all the power and glory of God and the mystery of creation is the West Rose Window of Washington National Cathedral. This contemporary masterpiece is also known as the "Creation" window. An abstract rendering of the beginnings of mankind, it was designed by artist Rowan LeCompte. His awe inspiring homage to the birth of the world was installed above the west front portal of the Cathedral in 1976. Set ablaze by the rays of the sun, the window is an impressive 25 feet in diameter and contains over 10,500 pieces of clear and colored glass. The center multifoil, with its diamond-bright rays, suggests the Word of God which set creation in motion. Multifoils at the perimeter of the window depict symbols such as the elements of fire, air, earth and water. Intensity of the jewel-like colors changes from moment to moment while watching as the sunlight shifts throughout the day. It then becomes evident why so many visitors say viewing the West Rose Window is not just an aesthetic experience, but a truly spiritual one.
The West Rose Window is recreated in an innovative art form pioneered by Glassmasters. It took hundreds of hours to recreate every image, every detail, every shift in color and tone. This window reproduction has been captured with great skill by the stained glass artists who have created works for museums and cathedrals throughout the world and can now be enjoyed in homes around the world.
