Louis Comfort Tiffany's life-long study of light culminated in this powerful window he entitled the Holy Spirit Window and completed about 1895. this is one of eight windows created for the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Illinois. The window, depicting a dove descending among the folds of brilliant sunlight, is installed in the east end of the building. The window is unusual in its radial structure design. Depth is achieved through the use of up to three layers of glass in places, and the border sparkles with sapphire and emerald colored jewels. Mary Todd Lincoln was an active member of the First Presbyterian congregation; her husband, Abraham, although a good friend of the pastor, attended services only occasionally.
