8831 Notre Dame Rose Window
A window so powerful that it has been described as supernatural, the
Notre Dame Rose Window has brought tears to the eyes of visitors. This multicolored
splendor from the North Rose Window of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris
is called the Alchemists' Rose Window and was created in the 13th century. The
window is the supreme example of a rose window built up from a lattice of invisible
geometry. This window owes its legacy to the centuries-old tradition of Rose
Windows created to pay tribute to Mary, as symbolized by the rose. This particular
window depicts the Old Testament, with prophets in the innermost circle, kings
and judges in the next circle and high priests and more kings in the outermost
circle. They all surround Mary who holds the Christ Child upon her knee. She
represents the culmination of history before the birth of our Savior. The alchemists'
Rose is recreated in an innovative art form pioneered by Glassmasters. It took
hundreds of hours to recreate every image, every detail, every subtle shift
in color and tone. From the 32 outermost lights, to the two interlocking 16-pointed
stars, to the red and gold halo around the Virgin and Child, the perfect symmetry
of the North Rose of Notre Dame Cathedral has been captured with great skill
by Glassmasters.
