284 Return to Chincoteague
October 17, 2002, award-winning artist Ron Louque was announced the
winner of the 2002 Federal Duck Stamp Contest. Louque (pronounced luke)
has been awarded 27 state conservation stamp awards, and published in many national
publications (including Ducks Unlimited, Audubon, and National Wildlife).
His magnificent image of two majestic Snow Geese soaring over the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge will appear on the 2003-04 Federal Waterfowl Hunting Stamp, a favorite of naturalists, hunters and collectors. Proceeds from the stamp are used for wetlands and waterfowl preservation.
Louques scientific attention to detail is phenomenal, but the spirit
of his work is drawn from the environment itself. He states, Through first-hand
experience the artist receives the inspiration for the painting as he is impressed
by the beauty and power of nature."
