279 Cardinals and Birch

State bird of no less than 7 states, the gleeful cardinal travels throughout the Southeast, and even into the mid-western US. The male is notable for it’s cheerfully red plumage and black surrounding bill, while the female wisely blends with her surroundings. Proudly posed in a sturdy birch tree, this couple seems to be evaluating their resting point with an eye towards the future.

From the Oval Office to USA Today, the Hautman brothers are making news as America’s favorite family artists. Bob, Jim and Joe are the first brothers to ever win the prestigious Federal Duck Stamp Contest, and have contributed art for 35 state and federal stamps. Their intrinsic love of wildlife is apparent in every painting, as they give collectors an up-close look at the natural world. This particular work is by Jim.
