1003 Enamel Box Mad Bluebird and Mate

From the cover of National Geographic, to a comparison with Madeline Albright in Time Magazine, the Mad Bluebird has fluffed his way into celebrity status. He and his mate were the subjects of Michael Smith’s award-winning photography series, taken in Smith’s backyard over two nesting seasons.

As is the custom of Eastern Bluebirds (known in the scientific community as Sialia Sialia), the male arrived first and began work on a nest. Many days of singing followed, as the male enticed a female to join him in starting family. The happy couple is captured here perched on a post, ready to begin their life together.

Deep, plush felt lines the inside of this elegantly appointed box. The embossed enamels of the lid carefully reproduce the details of Michael Smith’s photographic genius.
