533 Dragonfly Fairy

Dainty and graceful, the whimsical little fairy balances with the ease of an accomplished ballerina on the back of her valiant steed, a shimmering dragonfly.

Behind her the marsh flowers and reeds dramatize a crystal blue sky. Before her the pond lilies and shimmering reflections animate the fluttering twinkle of the magical and unexpected.

Artist and illustrator, Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, spent her life combining the fanciful creatures of her enchanting imagination with real-life creatures of her native Australia, including koalas, kangaroos and kookaburras. She collaborated with her sisters and colleagues in creating charming children’s stories, songbooks, and even programs and costumes for a Melbourne theater. During the 1920s and 1930s, Ida’s popularity blossomed, and her work was exhibited in numerous one-woman shows in Australia, Paris and London.
